World and U.S. Premieres
A prodigious composer of orchestral and chamber works since the 1960s, Gloria Coates is acclaimed for uncanny music that is part microtonal-expressionist, part postminimalist—at once turbulent and serene.
Headlining the program is the world premiere of Coates’ new chamber opera Stolen Identity, inspired by Coates' dream about her answer to the theft of creativity. Using texts by Emily Dickinson, Paul Celan and Alexandra Coates, she creates a Gesamtkunstwerk (total art work) combining musical, theatrical and visual elements on stage, including a large nest made out of violin bows and manzanita branches. Special guests include tenor Timur Bekbosunov, soprano Carmina Escobar, baritone Babatunde Akinboboye, saxophonist Ulrich Krieger, and the Isaura String Quartet. The program also includes Night Music, for alto saxophone, harp and gongs, and Symphony No. 10 (Drones of Druids on Celtic Ruins) featuring the CalArts Brass Ensemble and the CalArts Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Susie Allen.
